28 AprFleshed Out Demo 1 (Instrumental)

It’s Electric!

I’ve posted a couple of rough ideas, recorded with my acoustic (classical) guitar, but I wanted to go ahead and post something that was more fleshed out, recorded with electric guitar — something closer to what the second album will actually sound like.

The Story

Several years ago I was in a band with a singer who was somewhat obsessed with Marilyn Manson at the time. He bugged me to write a Marilyn Manson-esque song.

Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar

Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar

So I whipped out the riff you hear in the intro to this demo. I’ve only heard a handful of Marilyn Manson songs in my life, so I don’t know if it’s really in his style, but I have co-opted the riff as my own, as it’s really based on my own influences, like Black Sabbath and Metallica, in this case.

I wrote the other sections of the song and he wrote some lyrics and a melody. Then the band broke up. I found another singer and we worked up a slight variation of the song with new lyrics and vocal melody. Then that band broke up.

Some time later, with Inside The Black, I didn’t think the riff was right, so I never presented it during the time that the first album was being written. But I eventually thought I would work on it for the second album. I wrote a new verse and chorus (centered around the main riff) and the song was reborn. When I finished, I started to think of it as about the closest I will ever come to writing a punk song. Although in reality it’s probably as close to a punk song as Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love” is. It actually reminds me of Iggy and The Stooges — kind of a “Search and Destroy” vibe, maybe?

The Demo

Anyway, here is the song, with drums, bass and electric geetar. There aren’t any vocals yet. You’ll have to come back again when those are in place!

  1. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Inside The Black. Inside The Black said: Another demo for the 2nd album has been posted! Check it out now! http://bit.ly/d3lkZR [...]

  2. ProFuzz says:

I listened to the demo… it can be a good song at the end, you just need to find a good singer and make some good lyrics for it!

    • Inside The Black says:

Hey, thanks for listening. Glad you think we’ve got a good start on the music! Should have some vocal on these very soon.

  3. Blaster says:

Great sound on the guitar. Good separation on the tracks for the guitars. Sweet recording all the way round. The arrangement is tight. I got hooked right out of the box. I`d say the lead needs more work if anything.

    • Inside The Black says:

Thanks. I recorded the guitar directly into my computer and so it’s all processed inside the box. It’s not the preferred “real” sound, but it’s pretty painless for demos.

Yea, the solo usually develops more over time in the live show, and then it might change again in the final recording session. All of the solos on the first album were completely new compared to what I was doing live up until they were recorded, except for “Inside the Black” and “Ultraviolet.” So we’ll see where this one goes.

  4. That Guy says:

The drums are weak and a bit generic. Maybe if you tried recording the drums at a different location they will turn out better, but the beat could use some work regardless. And get a singer :)

  5. Mike says:

Needs work. I know it’s easy to be a critic but you asked for feedback so…your track reminds me of the first metal bands i was in. that was 22 yrs ago. This type of riff rock is not cool at all now. very generic chord progression. zero originality. old, out of date, just learning to play are what comes to mind. on a good note the actual recording ( probably a home 4 track) isn’t that bad. Maybe a career as a recording engineer is for you.

First off, please don’t listen to the putz (Mike) that left the last comment. I’ve seen and heard “professional” input from clowns like him for years yet oddly enough, none of them can ever produce a link to anything they’ve done that’s sold more than 3 copies (to family members usually) or inspired anyone other than themselves (strictly for ego purposes).
I like your mix and I think you’re on the right track so keep going! It’s a rough prelim-mix and for what it is it sounds great and has loads of potential. I personally got out of the habit of passing roughs along to show people because people these days are typically jealous narcissistic know-it-alls that can’t find the personal strength to say something positive (you can typically throw complimentary out the window). My suggestion to you is continue to do what makes you happy and just work hard at it but remember to have fun doing it.
Also remember that a lot of the dorks that never “made it” in music like to lash out at the young guys while hiding behind their years of expertise (at not making it I tend to assume) because it seems to make them feel better. I think in the future those providing “serious” criticism should be required to post a link to their own material so we can all get an idea where they’re coming from. Here’s our site: http://www.ivymic.com
I also have a studio in Sedona where I produce for other artists (I will gladly provide samples). Feel free to contact me if you ever want real advice. Or maybe Mike can point us all in a better direction?

  7. Robby says:

I like it a whole bunch! I am a singer in Flag. Don’t know if you’ve hooked up a theme for the lyrics or a vocal rythm. I sure would like the opportunity to contribute. I want absolutely nothing in return. Only to hang with the other heavy rock guys. If we come up with something cool, it’s all yours. Drop a line if you’d like ta talk. robbymeyers@hotmail.com
